Organizer
The organizer of the Symposium is the National Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Scientific Committee on Shiftwork, International Commission on Occupational Health.

Welcome to Japan
The 15th Symposium will follow the good tradition of a warm atmosphere and interactive discussions. We hope to establish closer contacts and networks for fruitful future cooperation. Japan is always near to your heart. Please come and join in the exchange of knowledge and experience that will help solve problems arising from profound changes in night and shift work. The chosen venue is relatively easy to reach and will ensure a pleasant stay.

Scope and Purpose
The Symposium is intended to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among shiftwork research and practitioners. It will cover a wide variety of areas related to managing night and shift work and improving the quality of working life. Special attention will be paid to new forms of work organization, risk management, health and tolerance of shiftworkers, coping measures and advances in biological adjustment. Papers on innovative strategies and new methods are most welcome.

Who should participate ?
We encourage and invite researchers and experts interested in working time and health/quality of work life issues to attend. This interdisciplinary meeting is open to basic and applied studies that address night and shiftwork from the medical, biological, behavioral, ergonomic, social and economic points of view.

Date and Venue
The dates of the Symposium will be 10 - 13 September, 2001 (Monday through Thursday). The Symposium will be held in "Shonan Village Center" , Hayama, Japan, a beautiful medium-sized congress center to be reached in about one hour by train from the central part of Tokyo.

Structure of the Programme
The program will include plenary lectures, mini-symposia, panel discussions as well as oral and poster presentations. The working language is English.

Topics and the Call for Papers
The general theme of the symposium will be " Innovative Strategies in Managing Shiftwork " . Papers are welcome on the following topics:

  • Risk management at shiftwork
  • Managing health and tolerance of shiftworkers
  • Sleep strategy of shiftwokers
  • Advances in biological adjustment
  • Night and shiftwork and women
  • Shiftwork in developing countries
  • Flexible shiftwork systems

The call for papers with instructions for preparing abstracts will be sent as the Second Announcement to all those who have returned the reply form.
